Hello everyone,

stumbled upon this site while looking for info on euthanasia. Guess not a a great way to introduce myself but it's how I found you.

I am wondering if there is any update to the oragel method. I have a 5 year old ACF who is having a tough time and I want to be prepared. Clove oil has been suggested but I have not found an accurate dose and want to be sure it is done properly. Currently she is being treated with tetracycline for what I think is septicemia after two rounds of Maracyn-2 and 2 weeks of Melafix. There is a history of course but right now I am just looking for humane - at home - euthanasia advice for my dear girl. :(

thanks,
lele

Did you find this:

Sorry about it, and good luck.

Hi, yes, that was the article I was referring to. I wasn't sure when it was written and I also wasn't sure if it can be used on an aquatic frog such as an African Clawed Frog. question about "updating" referred to "This method has not yet been accepted by the National Research Council on Pain and Distress in Laboratory Animals, probably due to how recently the publications involving these products have come out."

My fear is that it may affect her detrimentally but not kill her or it may burn or hurt her and cause a painful death if I use too much due to her size as ACF's are relatively large frogs.

thanks,
lele

Hello Lele,

Are you sure that you have exhausted all possible treatments? Perhaps obtaining an expert opinion from a credible vet before you do go through with euthanasia. I can understand your sorrow nor do I mean to cheapen the amount of work that you have put in already. But I'm sure the procedure involving euthanasia will be just as tough...if not worse.

Nonetheless, I hope it all goes well with which ever path you decide to embark on.

Jay.

Hello Jay,

Thank you for your thoughts and input. I probably should have updated here. Skippy died in her tank - on her own - Monday May 5th :( I had actually brought her to the vet the previous Friday to have her euthanized (decide I couldn't do it myself since I was not comfortable with dosing amounts and did not want to cause her any suffering), While sitting and waiting for him I changed my mind, as you said, maybe I had not tried everything. Three days later she was dead. I do not know exactly what happened as she had been a perfectly healthy for for over 4 years with absolutely no change in her care nor her environment. I will miss her. I take a lot for photos and made a little memory album of her which helped greatly as it put all the fun pictures in my head (her dancing with her imaginary friends, stuffing food in her mouth, "asking for a hug") rather than how she looked that Monday morning. Those memories are here if you are inclined to take a look. http://pets.webshots.com/album/563333081smjvub

Thanks again,
lele
