What is the best way to clean out a tank for use of a different species. I want to move my Notos (Eastern Newts) to a 20 g long I have, but the last inhabitant was a paramesotriton hongkongensis. What steps should I take to ensure it is a safe switch?

Take it outside, hose it out, spritz with bleach, rinse it out, rinse it out, rinse it out, soak over night, rinse it out, rinse it out some more, and then rinse it again.

Alternately, you can scrub with salt, or with baking soda, and then rinse it, rinse it, and rinse it some more.

I don't like bleach, baking soda and white vinegar work marvel with a bit of elbow grease...

Plus I love it when your poor the vinegar on the baking soda!!! And like Kaysie said, rince rince and rince some more.

Thank you all for the info!

I use a combination of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide.
The key is spray them on separately, one at a time, and allowing them to mix on the surface.
Allow it to sit on the surface for a bit, wipe it all down, getting everything nice and covered, and then rinse it off well.

I like this method because it's not as harsh as bleach, but is just as effective at cleaning and disinfecting.

That's exactly what I was looking for...Thank you!

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
