Photoperiod in tylototriton viv.

Does the photoperiod influence the beavior of a Tylo. Shanjing? Does it have any infunence in breeding process? I have all the year the light turned on, 17hours a day! just the time i´m not sleeping! could the individuals die? thanks.

Seventeen hours of light will cause quite a bit of stress to your newts. As for breeding shanjing I have never done it but given the fact that they come from China, which has seasons, the amount of daylight would certainly have an effect on breeding. Right now I would do 10 hours daylight and then 14 hours with lights out for about 6-8 weeks. Then every week after that you add an hour of daylight until you get to 14 hours of light and 10 hours of lights out. I have used this method for a myraid of other species and so far its working out pretty well so you might want to give it a shot.

So in conclusion I don't think a photoperiod is an absolute must but it sure would help.

I agree that 17 hours of light may be a bit much, especially if you are planning on breeding them. 17 hours of light will not kill your newts. But it may be better to "follow nature". I adjust the timers on my aquarium lights (about every month or two) to make the hours of light match the length of the day outdoors.

I do that too. I wish they made a photo-sensor timer that went ON in the morning and OFF at night, instead you can only get them the other way around!

They have adjustable time timers. They have little pegs that you set around a dial, and you set the dial to the right time. You just set the pegs so it comes on in the morning and turns off at night. Of course, you would have to re-adjust the pegs every week or so to keep up with the photo period, but it only takes a few seconds to move the pegs.
