Cheapest Food for Axolotl?

I spent 27$ buying a pound of blackworms from an ad I found in the for sale section of this forum.. the ad said it would include a holder for the worms and then I got the worms.. but no holder/container. I fed my baby axolotls the worms until a few days ago when they all died in the tupperware container. Basically you don't need to buy any food for them. It's free in your yard. Just go dig up some earth worms which I've been reading is the best food you can give the axolotl anyway. There are all different sizes of worms in the dirt just get some that will fit in their mouths.

Hi mistari! You misread the ad. For $19.95 you get 6 oz of worms and a holder etc, for $27 you get 1lb of worms. They do a great job packaging and shipping don't they?

They worms all died? I did that. Forgot to put the excess back in the fridge. You need to rinse daily or twice daily and not cover them with to much water. In that ad - there is a link back to the worm peoples website for care of the worms. The worms take care and maintainance.

Hi Josh,

I'm from Japan, I was born there, I've lived all over and currently live near Tucson AZ. I've lived in Phoenix too.

Yes, live blackworms are available here in the US. Phx has a much larger petstore population to shop from than Tucson - so break out the phone book and start calling.

Like I said I'm all for saving a buck. My local fish store has sales for buy one get one free or half off for its frozen fish foods and I make sure to stock up then.

I got 2 blister packs of bloodworms & $3 worth of crickets - came to $11. Because I feed such a wide variety of foods those packages of bloodworms will probably last a couple weeks at the LEAST more than likely it'll last me a month. So I figure each package cost me about $3.50 (cause I didn't get a detailed receipt, just my debit reciept which only has a total).

SO, if you get 3 portions of blackworms @ $2 per portion thats $6 + $7 worth of bloodworms + a $5 or $8 bag of pellets = $18 or $21 worth of pet food that will last maybe 2 months?

A baby axy @ 3" needs to be fed daily. Its better to overfeed and clean up excess food, than to feed to little with these guys. If you're not willing to do this, I think maybe you should look for a different pet.

That is just my opinion. Maybe there are others who don't agree but thats how I've raised over 24 baby axies from 1" to 8"+ without losing a single baby - except one to an accident.

I fed them daily until they were about 6" long and were slightly plump looking. I didn't keep records so I don't know how long that took.

I'd really like to see another axy lover join us here, but I'd also like to see them succeed.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to cut corners, I am just trying to save money. When I first started looking at food I thought I would be spending like $50 a month on food, but I can easily do like $20 or more if needed.

So how long would 1lb of worms last me?

Also, you can feed them crickets? I have a chameleon, and I feed him crix, I have hundreds of 1/2" crix. Could I use these every now? Would they just float around until the axie seem him or can crix survive in wateR?

You could probably grab a gut loaded cricket with tongs and submerge it to feed the axy but its not a part of their regular diet. They don't feed at the surface, the snuffle through mud eating the critters they find there. Generally small worms and weird larvae. I know in my pond the occassional earthworm is seen dead on the bottom - although now that my goldfish have gotten so numerous - I really don't see anything except rocks on the bottom.

But I've tempted to sink a cricket or two for the axies - the crickets I buy are for my whites tree frog and tiger salamanders - which also get earthworms.

For starters I think you should get the small pellets & the 6 oz of blackworms with keeper. Mark when you purchased the worms & pellets and see how long they last - I imagine both will last a good while - probably over a month. Its really hard to judge because I have so many more animals. I also feed the blackworms to fish now and then.

How do you train an Axie to start eating the pellets? Mine had Gold Fish in his tank when I got him and they apparently always ate the pellets before the Axies got a chance - so the owner just hand fed them on bloodworms and earthworms. Noir won't even give the pellets a second look and will go without food rather than eat them!

And thanks for the advice on rinsing the earthworms!

Cheers

My 4" from mike shrom were eating pellets just fine when I got them. The tiny babies I've been raising from Kaysie - I drop the pellets on their heads and they snap at them!
