After a long wait, here he is! Male leucistic, approx 1 year.
It was a 4 hour round trip to drive to pick him up but it was worth it!

Any suggestions for names? He was called Pepu in his old home but I think he needs a new name.

Oh so cute! Looks like a Herman to me. :)

That's an awesome Axolotl. What camera did you use? The quality is very good. I can't get any photos like that.

I think my camera is a finepix or something. I took a lot of photos to get these ones, there were a lot of blurry shots deleted!

Hes adorable how big is he? he could do with a nice juicy worm or two  ! some one mentioned Herman sticking with the H theme Henry, usually id choose quite a random or strange name but he just looks like a Henry to me!

Enjoy the wonderful world of axolotls!

Yes I thought he could do with filling out a little, nice to have some confirmation on here. He seems to love the bloodworms his owner told me to feed him, so I dont think it will be long until he has a nicely rounded tum. I think he was fed every other day but im going to feed him daily for a bit and see how he goes.

He is about 15cm total in length and a year old I think, smaller than I expected actually. Lots of growing to do yet.

As for names, Im erring towards 'blanco' - then when I get a nice wild type pal from esoteric in a few months he can be called 'tinto'.

Vino blanco means white wine, and vino tinto means red wine.
well practiced on my holidays :D

I do quite like the 'Henry' option though. Ugh now im all undecided again. I will give myself a deadline of deciding tonight before bed, and if I dont sleep well I can change my mind in the morning!

Bloodworms aren't really suitable as the main diet staple. They are good as part of the diet however you'll need Earthworms for the staple.. Small or chopped to start off with. They are as near to a "perfect" food as you can come and are easy to culture and less messy to feed.

Nice looking critter though. Just needs a little meat on his bones. :D

Yep onto it, esoteric has just pointed me in the direction of shrimp pellets and earthworms. lets hope my little one isnt too fussy.

anybody else finding they can waste a considerable portion of their evening just sitting in front of the tank watching them trundle around?

ABSOLUTELY! lol If you weren't doing this, we'd think there was something wrong with you! Mac and I have been well documented in our obsessions with our tanks, nice to have another among us!

He is a cutie, earthworms should fill him out in no time!

Sure is. I still get in trouble for "wasting time" instead of using time wisely by watching TV!

Dont forget to add the time apparently wasted 'on that bloody axolotl forum again'

ahem, best go downstairs now....

Hey Carri, I've been calling one of my babies Tinto all day, you'd better let me know if you change your mined. :p

As for "...that bloody axolotl forum!" Hmm... I've heard that before, I found 6 months of browsing hard core pornographic and gambling websites soon had her grateful for "...that bloody axolotl forum!".

hehe you make me laugh. Might try that strategy ;)

'Blanco' it is then, decision made. Cant let poor little Tinto down. Big bro is waiting and practicing bubble bouncing technique.

I an so new to these, I like Blanco, and can't wait till I see my first bubble bouncing. Right now just setting up the first tank,,,, can't wait!, Keep up the pictures, they are great.

Hey there lil mermaid, try not to explode with anticipation, it will be worth the wait.

Here is a new pic of Blanco chillin in his crib..

I just bought him a moonlight lamp, it looks cool.
See the hoops idea stolen from gomez? Blanco hasn't noticed them yet but I will be patient.

And what a crib it is! hes a very lucky axie youve done a good job there the lighting is also perfect and makes the tank look wicked, Blanco will always look blue though, Gomez is always blue too haha! gomez doesnt use his hoops much but when he does its funny to see, Im sure youl see blanco having a play with them at some point!

Give yo'self a pat on the back and watch the magic happen! (it sometimes just doesnt happen, lazy axies haha!) also YES about the worms theres nothing like watching an axie slurp up a nice juicy wriggler like a piece of spaghetti mmmm!

Gomez says hi to Blanco and wishes he was that skinny haha!

P.s you may have a problem keeping those plants alive with that light (i just have plastic ones now for the same reason), just make sure when they start lookin abit haggard you take em out before they start rotting and mess up the beautiful tank!

Hi carriw

I love Blanco's crib it is soooooo fantastic!

That is a beautiful set up. Amazing. Looks like it should be on the tank manufacturers brochure. I'm going to get a lighting setup like that for part of the day (live plants).

wow thanks for your nice messages, must say im rather proud of his mexican desert/rainforest themed pad. Seriously cant fit any more stuff in it so must stop shopping. The big plant hides the filter and is a barrier to the water flow.

I bought three live plants - one was tall and stringy - the guy in the shop said it would be the best one in dim light. I kept the lights completely off for a week to check. Sure enough it was the first one to wither and rot so i have dumped it. strangely the other two seem to be doing ok. I dont have the light on much because I dont want it to heat the tank up too much.

I must also say that this forum is ace. Started to have a 'new owner paranoia' episode last night becuase sometimes his gills are pale and other times they go very pink. Wondered if he was stressed, temp ok etc (its pretty warm here at the mo so im always checking his tank is ok). Searched the forum to discover that their gills go pale when they are inactive and colour more when they are moving around. Exactly what is happening to Blanco. I just caught him having a snooze! panic over. Thanks everyone.

though have just realised that from now on his gills will just look blue anyway... lol

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
