Congrats on the new axie looks lovely :D

Sorry to put a dampner on your post but please get rid of the gravel in your axies tank as your axie wil eat it and it will end up impacted. Axies act like a hoover when they eat and any food gets sucked up along with the gravel.

A bare bottomed tank or sand is the best for them, just make sure if you use sand you wash it through first :)

Also the cute frog will also probably end up in your axies mouth when it gets bigger so you may want to get rid of that aswell.

Good luck & welcome to the forum

Thanks for the tips, i thought the frog may get eaten so took it out this arvo, thought the gravel was ok as that the same as the pet shop?!, ill look into getting some sand thanks :)

Definitely swap to sand, Tequila will thank you for it! Sounds like the pet shop would benefit from that piece of advice too.

Congratulations, Tequila has a cute little face!

Oh Tequila is here too! Sorry I've literally just echoed Zoe's words on your other post in the gallery!

Be careful how much trust you put in your local petshop. Even if they have the right intent we see a few folk come by here who have unfortunately been misinformed by the shops they got their axolotls from (I should know, I was one of them :p)!

Thanks all :), umm what sand should I use?, and where can I get it from?, I assuming beach sand would contain to much salt,

You can use playsand or aquarium sand but as I said make sure you wash it through thoroughly otherwise it will make a right mess in your tank lol! Beach sand is a no due to salt but you have already said that :)

Thanks for listening to the advice and dont worry a lot of us have been misinformed I also started off with gravel due to the same advice and learnt the hard way with my poor axie pooping gravel for months.

Any other questions just shout!!!

Yup, me too!

(Thats me too starting off with gravel, not me pooping it out)

Organised some play sand, will pick it up on weekend, i finish work to late to get it otherwise so hopefully she doesnt eat any gravel before then, been thinking of starting an earthworm farm for her and am looking for a mate for her so she doesnt get lonley, have also convinced my housemate to swap tanks as the other one is large and doesnt have a light ect, maybe i should go digging in the garden for worms?, too hot here thou they will be to deep at the momment. I just had my tattoo touched up and joked to the artist to add some gills to it lol (its a salamander grawling up my calf with celtic designs of plants behind).

Untill I get some worms she has baby guppys to eat so hopefully she will be happy.

I dig in the garden for worms when it's rainy - they go down a treat!
can you post a photo of the tattoo? I'd love to get an axie tattoo - but my bf already thinks I'm obsessed!

its not an axie its a salamander, i joked to the artist toda about getting gills added lol

Great news on the sand :) Until then you could always take out the gravel and just leave her on a barebottomed tank floor that way no danger of her ingesting any and also you will have to clear the gravel out anyway to make way for the sand :) You will also be amazed at the amount of debris you will find under the gravel (yuck)

When you swap tanks over try and keep 50% of your old tank water as its cycled (presume it is anyway) that way when you add new water to the bigger tank it would be the same as doing a water change :)

As for the worm farm great idea its what most of us do and have had mine since october and was the best thing i did, no more digging up the garden lol!

Great tattoo

Also regarding food, you can use earthworms, bloodworms and axie pellets, salmon pellets, shrimp pellets etc in the time being. Guppies are fine as long as they have been quarantined for 30 days if you did not breed them yourself.

Good luck

can I ask why I cannot use guppies bred myself?, the ones i have in tank atm were bought from pet shop as live food, but am unsure of why breeding my own not good? thanks for the advise zoe as I have owned 2 axies in the past (rex and red) and had them almost 10 years before they passed, and was ill informed and had no idea, rex used to "hoover" the gravel and spit it out an now I just feel bad as I wasnt taking the best care of them as I thought I was. This advise is invaluable and hopefully tequila and when I get her/him a mate and others will flourish!

NO problem at all and so sorry for late reply! Trust me a lot of us started out wrong but this is why this forum and its members are so valuable as we can all help each other out!! If you liek using feeder fish will probably be cheaper for you in the long run to breed them yourself and yes if you do you will know they are disease free etc
