Hi there,

I have just been prescribed F10 disinfectant by a vet for parasites/fungus on my axolotl. I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with using this?

F10 is a disinfectant. Using it as a treatment sounds like an off-label usage (not intended by the manufacturer). Seems odd to me, but I don't know. Are you using it?

Hi,

F10 is a disinfectant fairly wide used by vets for exotics. It seems to be reasonably effective, and certainly very mild/non-irritant - it is routinely used for nebulising birds (where it gets into the lungs and air sacs), to give you some idea of how tissue-friendly it generally is. Obviously concentration will affect this, but it does seem very non-irritant and safe at normal concentrations.

Hope this helps,

Bruce.

Very interesting Bruce. At what dilution is it generally used in treatment - 1:500, 1:250, etc? And how is it used... as a 'bath'? If so, what is the duration of the bath and how often - or is it administered by some other method? It appears be a combination product with broad spectrum activity against many pathogens....have not heard of this before. Thanks in advance for the information.

For what it's worth, this is the info I was able to find on what is actually *in* the stuff:
F10 Biocare - Technical Information
The only ingredient I recognize is Benzalkonium Chloride, which is the active ingredient in Bactine (which has been used in treating amphibians).

Are you using it?

We are using it, yes. 1ml for every 300ml so we are shallow bathing him (so he is just covered) in 600ml for 10 minutes at a time. He doesn't seem to mind too much so the concentrate can't be too strong. When he is put in a salt bath, he thrashes about but he is completely calm in the F10 baths.

We've only done three baths so far so it is too early to tell whether it is working yet. I was mainly to posting looking for some "success stories" from fellow keepers.

I have never heard of the stuff before this, so you are probably the trail-blazer here. Please keep us posted!

Are you doing the 10 minute baths once daily or more frequently?

10 minute baths once daily. The course is for 10 days and then we go back to the vets to see if it has made any difference.

Hi there! Just wondering how those F10 baths came along? I'm about to do the same...
