Ragged tail for no apparent reason? Help!

Aarnas tail is very ragged and I cant figure out why! I keep her in a bare bottom 10 gallon, and she over a year old. She has a fake plant and a plastic hide in her tank, as well as a sponge filter. She is about 6.5 inches, and has appeared to stop growing (at least as crazy fast as she was growing, she was 3 inches at 9 months when i got her).

I dont see any signs of fungus or mold in her tank or on her, and I clean the tank often, so I dont know what it could be. The only other thing I could think of is maybe her parameters are off? I havent been able to read her readings because I think my test kit expired, and I'm getting another soon.

attached is the pic of her tail as it is now. It seems to be getting worse, as when she was smaller just the tip was a little funky but now its extremely ragged. This makes me sad

Should I get her a different fake plant? Perhaps this one is too sharp

Sometimes axies just go crazy for no apparent reason, they bump into things and hurt themselves, it's not usually too much of a concern but if you can buy a silk plant as they are a bit softer

I prefer silk plants too. They're a little less pokey on the skin.

This literally just happened to my Leuc. I am assuming she will heal it back...
Now I need to play detective on how she did it or who did it:angry:

Ah well its a shame she was a nice perfect looking axolotl too lol.


To me it looks like a bite which I don't know if that make me feel better or not...

This has happened to me before as well. I thought it might have been her plant, but the second time it happened, the plant was already gone!

Wouldn't surprise me if she had just bitten her own tail XD. They are wonderful animals, but sometimes very dim...

I'm sure that your axie's tail will heal just fine

Glad to say, her tail is healing MUCH better now that the fake plant is gone. Its almost totally healed now

As for biting her own tail, she DID try and eat the thermometer yesterday, so...

Yep i saw my lil lady chomp hers just last night however caused no damage to herself she was turning to grab food n got her tail by accident , x
