Illness/Sickness: Broken Leg??

Hi there, just another update/concern. The salt baths have worked a treat in removing the fungas, however I have noticed poncho's gills have been deteriorating somewhat in the past few days, any ideas on what could be the cause of this? She also seems to be very veiney especially on the top of her head. She still is acting just as normal. Any feedback or advice would be great.

Sure, here are a few photos. Just review what ive been doing, 100% water changes every day, salt baths every 12 hours, attempting to feed but with no luck, keeping in the fridge mostly due to hot weather outside. If ive missed any vital info, please ask.

It's probably because of the salt baths. Although they're great at clearing up fungus they're harsh on the skin and gills. Once the course of salt baths have finished they should grow back normally.
 
That was my original thought, but just wanted it confirmed by an expert ;) will keep posting with any updates/questions. Thanks.
 
Hi again, I know this post is dragging on a bit and has gone off track a bit from the original worry of the broken leg but I'm just concerned that poncho isn't doing too great. Basically it's been a few days since I stopped the salt baths as she was completely clear of any fungus. Poncho still seems very veiney and has a very curled tip on her tail. She hasn't eaten since putting her in the fridge despite offering earthworms, bloodworms and dry pellets. She isn't super skinny but it is a worry. I just cant figure out why she is so distressed, we are giving her fresh water everyday. Back to the original concern, her leg is healing but at a very slow pace, possibly not helped by not eating.
 
Putting your axie in the low temperature of the fridge will slow down their bodily processes, meaning that she isn't going to want food as often. This will also keep the healing process slow. That being said, she still needs to eat.

If the fungus is gone and there aren't any open wounds, it might be time to get her out of the fridge to improve her chances of regaining her appetite and speeding up her healing. Wait for a few more opinions on this, though. When you take her out of the fridge, do so only after careful consideration, and keep a close eye on her to ensure the fungus doesn't return.
 
Thanks for your reply, I know sooner or later going back in the tank is inevitable but as I live in Australia and we are going through a very hot spell of weather I think the fridge is the best place for her for now. My biggest worry is that she has gone from an axolotl that ate every second day before her injury and now hasn't eaten in 3 weeks, even that can't be normal under fridging conditions. This curled tail and veins showing could be caused by not eating perhaps? And due to the leg injury. I just want to know I'm doing the right things and everything possible to make her recover.

The almond leaves can prevent fungal infections and help cure it once it is there. It is far gentler on an axolotl than a salt bath which causes a stress response.

Yes, take one almond leaf and drop in tank.... unless its a small tank in which case break it up and use a quarter of leaf...
 
What about an Axolotl that is in a fridge in a smallish container? And what kind of store can I buy almond leaves in?
 
The longer she goes without eating, the weaker and less able she'll be to fight off infections and heal.

Especially considering that some of the methods of treatment can't be done while in the fridge, I really think it might be time to take her out. If you're worried about the heat wave, maybe you should move your tank to the coolest room in the house and keep frozen bottles of water in her tank on a constant basis. My fire belly newt had a fungus infection and I kept him in the fridge too long because I was too afraid of the fungus coming back; I couldn't get him to eat and I'm positive this is a major factor that led up to his death.

Regardless of what you do for her, if you can't get her to eat she isn't going to get better, and the longer she goes without food the harder it will be for her to pull through.
 
Hi everyone, just thought I should end this rather lenghty thread.

Unfortunitly it's with sad news that I have to do so. Poncho succumbed to her injuries. I only wish I had a chance to place her back in the tank earlier but with the heat wave we have had in Victoria I decided that it wasn't for the best, maybe I was wrong. She died, as I suspect she was born, with a big smile on her face.

I would like to thank everyone of you who offered advice, I am very proud to be a member of this great site and have great admiration for the work you do.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

I had a very hard time after my fire belly Ignatious died, so I can empathize with the grief you must be going through. Just remember that you did everything you could for her; sometimes things happen that are beyond our control.

Learn from this and take comfort in the fact that she isn't suffering now.
