Hey new member needing help..

Hey guys I joined this site and in the time between signing up and writing this post iv had a problem occur. So sorry that my 1st post is on a bit of a downside..
Iv looked in some places and spoke to some people to try find answers for my problem but I seem to be getting different answers and different information.. So if anyone could help it would be much appreciated..
Here it goes..

I have a turtle and went to a pet shop to buy food for it.. When in a tank I seen these 2 axolotls now I knew nothing of these and was wry intrigued.
after talking to the guy in the pet shop and gathering as much info as I could I bought them. He provided me with the axolotl, pellet food blood worms and Gravel.. He told me the gravel was ok. I did a bit of research to find that the gravel was infact not ok.. (Got 2 bits of info here) I bought some sand.. (Which I have been told is better and even told is worse) when I got back from getting some sand I have found my axolotl like this


Now my other one looks nothing like this and seems ok..

I removed te gravel from the tank and found a red stone in with the new sand and what looks like gravel within what looks like waste..

I don't know what to do guys I'm getting worried and fearing the worst..

Now iv been told 3 things:

1) leave him in tank and keep an eye on him

2) put him in fridge

3) in a tank alone with human laxatives??

Now I don't know what to do guys I need help..

If he's already pooping out the gravel, your best bet is to leave him as is and monitor.

Keep feeding him (also, get some earthworms! They're much healthier than bloodworms), and it should help pass the gravel.

Don't use human medication on animals.

Nice to see another Welsh owner on the site, pet shop owners dont seem to know a lot about axolotls tbh and poor care information is standard. The white axy looks to have a full gut, it may be gravel , just leave it in the tank it may pass it without problems over the next few weeks, if you find it is vomiting its food or losing weigh you can fridge it to help. Stay away from medications not proscribed by a vet or recommended on this site.

I'm just wondering where you got your Axolotls from? I got my two from the fish shop in Ewenny Garden Centre. I found the owner there to be lovely, very knowledgeable about fish but utterly clueless about Axolotls, he had them on gravel and was under feeding them. I have been considering re-writing his care sheet etc for him if anyone is interested in joining me? I'd feel bad going in and telling him off as his advice is given with the best of intentions, he just doesn't have the knowledge and has been badly advised by previous shop owners and suppliers .

My first axolotls were bought ten years ago from pets at home Newport, since then I have raised them from eggs I have purchased / traded / bred or rehomed as adults. Just direct the pet shop owner to this site or write a simple care sheet for him, make sure to add this site on the care sheet lol.

Yea another welsh owner though to be honest I'm a little clueless.. I just need advice hints and tips and I think ill be fine lol

Snap mate exactly where I got mine from. He's a lovely guy iv always gone there because for equipment he isn't that badly priced...

He is an absolute sweetheart.

Both my Axies had bellies full of gravel when I brought them home, I'd lay odds yours are the same. Thankfully both mine have passed all their gravel, I just left them in a barebottomed tank (purely to make spotting and removing bits of gravel easier), fed them and let nature take its course .

Try to source your next axolotls from private breeders, they are cheaper and tend to be better looked after. The closest breeder on this site to you would be me lol...... I have some leucistics, melanoids and wild types available in a couple of months.

If you were to have axolotl is there a general rule of not putting small axolotl in with larger? I would like 2 more preferably black tho

Similar sized axolotls tend to be ok with each other as adults but a bit nippy as juveniles, if you mix sizes you are asking for trouble, the greater the size difference the greater the possibility of a tank mate being damaged or lunch.

If you put a 4" axolotl in with a 10" adult it wont even touch the sides as it goes down lol
