Can you help me identify this guy and tell me what his water temp. needs to be as well as other important care? He was sold to me as a Paddletail by a crappy pet store that don't know what they are talking abut...they had a poor Malayan Box Turtle in 60 degree water as well, consequently the little guy wouldn't eat and was deteriorating quickly, so they gave him to me for free, and ever since I put him in a bigger tank with 82 degree water he has been eating like a little piggy and very active as well. Anyway, I attached pictures of the newt. Any help on identifying him is appreciated so I can provide him with the proper care. Thank you.

P. chinensis?

I hope you're not keeping the newt that warm. Regardless of the species, none of them like it that warm.

Correct on all counts - Paramesotriton chinensis and being kept terribly hot. This time of year it would likely be experiencing temperatures closer to 47F, and under 70 pretty much all the time. Also illegal to possess in WA, as I read the law.

Pet stores get away with selling illegal animals all the time. They also get away with abusing animals. I know a place here that sold a wild caught female gila monster that was crammed into a ten gallon display tank. And got away with advertising it. No one is going to come after you and bang on your door to give up the newt, but make sure you never release it, and preferably don't ever rehome it to somebody else.

Potentially invasive. The climate on the west coast is suitable for a vast number of salamanders. Vancouver BC, at 49 degrees north, is presently experiencing almost identical conditions to Shanghai China, which is 31 degrees north. If bananas and palms can grow in BC, virtually any Chinese salamander can live somewhere on the west coast.

I did not know there are other herp-lovers in Pullman. Glad to know I am not only one

I think you are referring "Pets are People, too" in Moscow right? lol That store really sucks in keeping its herps, and the staff was trying to teach me how to keep reptiles when I bought the Malaysian box turtle that they recently got...

Anyway, it's Paramesotriton chinensis, commonly known as Chinese warty newt. It prefer cool water, and I keep mine in room temp, which is like 60. Fully aquatic newt and very territorial, eating any kinda of protein food you offer, I feed mine with worm, cricket, and sometimes pork and fish meet.
