Hey! I got two axolotls a few months ago and I've been stumped as to what color-type one of them is. Up until now I figured he was either a speckled meanoid or a wild-type (I'm no good at checking for the shiny eyes this). Anyway, I had a few pictures on another website and someone suggested that Nero looks like a dark silver dalmatian axolotl. I'm really not sure, though he is very speckled and for the most part a silvery-grey, so could someone clear it up for me? (sorry the pictures are so little)

This is a picture of his from the side. Nero looks a bit lighter in person.

Another side-ish view

This is a picture of his face so you can see his eyes. The lighting was weird so he looks brown-ish, even though he isn't.

So yeah, can anyone help me out?

Hmmm... it's difficult to say. Like you said, the pictures are too small. Do you have a possibility of taking any larger pictures, with regular daylight?

Just took at look at your album in the Albums and Galleries section....he could well be just what you think he is. The colouring is wonderful. He (forgive me if it's a she) is a beautiful bluey grey.....lucky you. :)

What a stunning axolotl you have! I think s/he's a very lovely wildtype... Because the eyes have the shiny ring (from what I can tell) which means it's not melanoid and aren't silver dalmations a colour morph of the melanoid therefore don't have the shiny ring?

Hmm I don't know much about silver dalmations so people correct me if I'm wrong :) Eitherway though, your axy is absolutely gorgeous!! :D

Nikkiiii!!! Does that mean toothless may be a silver dalmation as well? He is spotted just like this. Actually almost twins(they are brother/sister)

I do not see a shiney ring in their eyes. Yours nor mind nor nikkis. Am i wrong?

This is the best picture of texas i could find showing his gold ring. He must not of been much older then nero or toothless at this point.
I am 100% sure they are melanoid.. Or silver dalmation? Not quite sure what that means

From what I've read (and I've read/researched a lot), silver dalmatian is just a special or uncommon colouration of a melanoid axolotl. Basically they are lighter coloured melanoids with darker spots. So you were right when you said Nero was a melanoid (sorry to doubt you :D)

Makes sense!
There are your main color morphs but i find as each individual grows older they change color. And because of all the captive breeding there has been people have bee. Breeding the odd colored ones. Its actually really cool! I love learnin about the color variations beyond the normal color variations.

Like echo my leucistic has black gill stems, pink filiments but is completely pink except for a few freckles and well texas, she is going to be a breeder i just need to find a beautiful boy lotl for her <3 and obv wait till she is old enough!

I think my melanoid is just a tad darker, unless its just lighting an im crazy. But he is spotted from head to tail as well. I got all excited when i saw the spots. I hope they both dont lose it as theygrow!

My favorite color morph are the black wild types. Black like a melanoid but they have gold spots all over <3

Just wanted to post my observations about eye rings. My wildtype is really dark and I too had a hard time telling if he had the shiny eye ring. I discovered on accident during a power outage that if you shine a flashlight on your axi in a dark room, the eye shine is obvious. I had a pretty low powered one, and it didn't seem to bother them at all. That's how I noticed one of my leucistic is also melanoid. Melanoid will have solid black eyes, they don't sparkle at all when you shine the light on them. Hope that helps!
Either way, he's gorgeous!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
