I had a cycling 4ft tank. My mother-in-law wanted to get rid of her white albino so rather than kill it I offered to house it with my others and find him a home. The white albino was perfectly fine when I got him but after about a week in a tub with daily water changes he started getting quite red. My other three were fine and the one little one in my already cycled 2ft was doing perfectly.

Once the tank was cycled I put all 4 (gold, melanoid, copper, albino) in together. I assumed the tubs were getting warm during the day when the heater was on, causing the reddness. Once the 4 were in the 4ft (overstocked by 1, I know. But it was supposed to be a fortnight at most) all of them looked fine. The albino went back to white and the other three were as healthy as ever.

My brother stuck a live plant in the tank from his fish tank. He had guppies and mollies and they all died. I still don't know what of, could be anything from starvation to ammonia to disease. I don't bother him with his fish, and he doesn't bother mine. He didn't tell me he'd given me this plant, but it's the only thing that had changed in the week before this all happened.

I was ready to ship the albino to Queensland for someone who wanted him, but he went red again. I told her I wouldn't ship him unless I knew he was okay. He kept eating fine but he didn't look healthy at all and over night he died.

After this happened I checked my water parameters, all at 0 except nitrate which was at around 40. Checked temp, still below 19.

Did a water change.

Two days later my copper had a bad fungus on his gills. I removed the other two and kept them in a storage container with daily water changes. Both kept eating fine. Did daily salt baths on the copper. He didn't make it.

Then my gold died in the night, and I don't know why. She had no fungus and was in fresh water. Nothing from the tank was with her other than my melanoid, who I found this afternoon dead the same way. All fresh water. I do not understand what happened.

Now I'm left with one axolotl, he was in a different tank to the others and doesn't seem to have been affected. Still eating and swimming and munching on the occasional guppy from my (quarantined) guppy tank.

So now I ask what I did wrong. Was it the plant? On the thread about my Copper I mentioned the plant and got blasted by a certain member for blaming a plant for my own ****ups. So what did I do wrong. What killed three healthy fish and one not-so-healthy fish. All I know is my wild type is fine and the lecustic at my mother-in-laws (who was with the albino) is also fine. Both are healthy. So it's something exclusive to my 4ft tank.

And before anyone else blames me for "butchering" my axolotl, don't panic. I'm not getting any more.

It does very much sound like it was something to do with that plant. Everything sounds fine up until that plant was added. Sounds to me like your brother's fish died of a disease, and the disease clung to the plant, which made your axolotls sick. I know, this is going to suck to say, but if you happen to still have any of the bodies, take them to a vet for an autopsy to figure out what the culprit really was.

I do still have my melanoid. I'll call up some vets nearby and see if any would be willing to autopsy, the vet hospital near me will probably be my best bet.

Keep us updated on what they say. I'm very curious about what happened, personally. Very sorry for your losses, by the way.

Hi Quentari

I am very sad to hear of your loses. Over my time on this forum I've noticed you have been a very active and helpful member. I saw the previous thread about your copper and that member that was absolutely hounding you and I choose to stay out of it. But in my opinion, they were ridiculously harsh and not very helpful. Accusing you of butchering your lotties was harsh and very uncalled for. Anyone could tell you love your lotties and you did your best.

We all make mistakes but as far as I'm aware you have done your best. You learned from your mistakes, you asked whenever you needed help, you followed peoples advice where appropriate. What more can one do?

I really hope that you do find out what happened to your precious water babies. It will give you piece of mind. I honestly think it was the plant because it seems to be the only logical answer. I also know you could not have done anything else. You have done your best and sadly you couldn't save them.

I don't have any advice and I don't know whats happened in your tank. But I just wanted to say that I'm very sorry and sad to hear of your loss and don't blame yourself. Please don't believe that you "butchered" your lotties because that isn't true. Any decent person that has followed your activity on this site could see that.

I happen to agree with jess.

But if you do decide to try again with more lottles, i would just make sure you clean the 4 foot tank thoroughly with a vinegar/water mix to kill of any bad bacteria/disease in there. And BURN that plant!!

Thanks everyone. I've already taken my vengeance on the plant (ripped to shreds in my backyard) and plan to clean the tank with the vinegar/water mix because whether we sell the tank or buy something different it has to be cleaned (don't want to sell it and accidentally kill a newbie's fish).

And thanks Jess, there's kind and mean ways of saying "it's your fault" or "you need to change what you're doing". It's just a shame there are people on here who opt for the rude way.

If your water conditions were correct (which they appeared to be) i wouldnt give up on lottles as you knew how to care for them.
My advice would be to only get one of two and ban your brother/partner from touching the tank! i couldnt imagine not having any lottles now, i think theyre going to be my pet for life

Well I still have Houdini at least. He's the lotl that had an adventure in a box a few weeks ago! he recovered fully from that luckily  I might consider lotl's in the future but nothing for a little while at least. And I agree, it's breaking my heart seeing that big empty tank!

I'm sorry for your loss Quentari, it's frustrating when you don't know what went wrong.

But if you're sure the albino and melanoid didn't have fungus that leaves 3 possibilities: Bacteria, parasite or congenital problem. Without a necropsy you may never know.

What did you do wrong? Well TBH you did the best you could. Maybe the fungus could have been caught earlier, and you might have saved the copper. But then again you might not, some fungi can be nasty and very quick to take hold.

The problem is that you had 2 things change very close together - a new axie and a new plant. Either one of them might have brought in something nasty.

Like I said in the other thread - burn the plant, kick your brother. Then lavish some love on the one you have left until you work up the confidence to get a friend for him.

Thanks. I plan on spoiling Houdini rotten!

And I haven't found anywhere that will autopsy yet, the vet hospital said "we can take a look" but they haven't ever had an axolotl before so I think it's not worth taking him there.

Well if you don't know what's killing and you can't get expert help locally when you need it then you need to think hard about whether they are the right pet for you - maybe something a little easier to manage would suit you better.

Yeah like I said, no new ones for a while. See how I go with my one remaining first.

I am so sad to hear how this all turned out :(
I'm very sorry for your losses.

I wonder if bleaching the tank would be a good idea? Of course, cleaning afterward with a little dawn liquid soap, then vinegar and water, then rinse... Rinse... Rinse...

Whatever it is/was, I am happy to hear you still have a baby... I hope he has a chance to grow old with you

cleaning afterward with a little dawn liquid soap

DO NOT under any circumstances EVER clean a tank with soap of any kind!!! Or bleach. Even after a dozen rinses you can still leave a residue, whic could kill anything you put in the tank. Same goes for anything you put in the tank.

Clean with swimming pool chlorine or vinegar, or if you really must a aquarium sanitiser designed for the purpose.

Unscented bleach is fine, you can use it as an ammonia source to start cycling an aquarium.

Ill just stick with the vinegar to be safe. Boiling water, then vinegar and water, then regular water, maybe repeat a few times, then sell it and bring back my 3ft tank for Houdini. A 15cm axolotl in a 4ft tank would get lost!

He'd love the 4ft tank! You could put loads of hides and ornaments in there for him to explore. Don't let this experience put you off. Once you've made sure your lotl is OK and doing well you could get another one. Perhaps try a different seller if you can in case it was something to do with genetics.

I'm so sorry that this has happened. It's always been obvious to me how much you care for your little guys.
