Wild type with purple color?

You have all the neat colored axis! I'm a bit jealous, but I wasn't willing to put the work in to raise over 200 babies either! I'll know who to talk to in a couple years when all your awesome colored axis are old enough to start breeding. :D So glad the chimera is growing well for you. That's a beautiful animal too. Hopefully that pair will throw another for me some day.

I bought this one from a member from this group October last year and when I got it it was only a few cms as it grew I noticed it had a blue/ purple colour to it and posted it on here but was told as it was only about 4 months I should wait to see what it turns out like. Im in Melbourne and got it from the west. I live over the other side but well worth the drive.

I will tank a pic of sooty 2morrow during the day to show what colour it is now.

Spot26 I bought 2 of mine from gumtree which suburb did you get yours from? and how long ago maybe they are siblings?

the 3rd pic should be the 1st pic and middle pic the last pic

Flee, that is one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever seen. It is gorgeous. I am also in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne but would definitely drive west for something like that!! Would love to get one like it.

It seems a lot of inexperienced people own very, very beautiful axolotls. It makes me so sad... I've seen plenty beautys on gumtree with lines like "they eat pebbles but it spits it out so it's okay", "eats pretty much anything you give them meat, fruits, vegetables - likes a varied diet" and "can walk in land for 20 or so minutes". Nooooo!!!

I'm glad you had the chance to buy this beauty and save it, spot.
Omigod, surely not. I must admit I've sent emails to some sellers on ebay begging them to take the pebbles out and so forth, but "can walk in land for 20 or so minutes"!!!! That is so far beyond horrifying, I don't quite know the appropriate response? Meanwhile, someone in Penrith, NSW is currently advertising an axie on Gumtree that looks pretty purple to me. It's the last one, she says.

Thanks Sweetie I must say its one of my favs, But I do love them all

Flee, I got mine from cranbourne east. Yours looks almost identical to mine. Isn't he beautiful!! can't wait to see what he looks like when he's full grown.

Wow that is a beautiful axe Flee. As for your post Sweetie...sometimes you wonder for the human race when there are such ignoramuses around! Wow, walks on land for 20 minutes...seriously!?

Yeah. It's as good as the post where someone talked about their local pet shop, where they used to take the 'Mexican walking fish' for a walk/slither around the shop every so often to amuse the customers.

Yep also on Instagram. Someone videoed an axolotl walking on her table as "training". I told her they shouldn't be on land at all they are purely aquatic aaaaaand then I got told off - " don't tell me how to care for my walking fish blah blah blah". I usually do comment on bad gumtree adds but nothing changes...

Oooooh I'm close to penrith! I might check it out.

I can't find the post Sweetie, are you able to link it? I can't see any purple ones :(

I went into a pet store to buy some things and it turns out one of the ladies used to breed axies and she was asking me what do I feed them and I said earth worms, pellets and frozen blood worm . She said what about frozen peas they love them and they are so cheap. Then she went on to ask if I remove mine from the tank much as her’s loved to go in the play pen daily. By the time I left the pet store I was speechless she had given me sooooo much info that was wrong and she had been a breeder.

This was about 2 months ago and she asked what sex mine were and I said I was still unsure and she said you do know how to tell the difference between the sexes? I said yes but I was told they were still to young to really be sure.

Even now at 8 months I am still playing the guessing game I am shocking at this I know for sure 1 is a boy over the last 2 weeks his bits have popping out and Im sure 2 are girls and 1 seems to be both lol

Spot26 by any chance did the seller also breed rabbits? I bought mine from the same area when they were only 8 weeks old but I know they had them listed for months.

Flee, yes they did actually!!! Do u think they are from the same people??? I cant remember when I got mine but I will look back for my old post on here just after I got them.

Flee, I got them in march this year. They said they were first time breeders???

OMIGOD!!!! This stuff is so so so sad. And the tragedy is it's not even uncommon.
So many horror stories - eg people selling axies and keeping them in appalling conditions while insisting they know how to look after their lotls - in addition to the standard story - "I got it from an LFS and they told me to give it gravel/a heater/beef hearts" etc etc. There simply MUST be something we can do to improve the general standard of care and advice from breeders/retailers. Isn't there?
I know. I'm being incredibly naive - inevitably, I will be told that tokenistic animal protection laws already exist but there's neither the will nor the resources to enforce them. But can't these people at least be reported to some authority?

I don't think there's much hope with authorities. A letter complaining about gravel to an authority most likely wouldn't even get read. My local pet shop used to hold axolotls on gravel and after telling them the dangers a few times (and a few lost axolotls :( ) they finally listened and went bare bottomed. You win some, you lose some. Sadly not many people are axolotl-crazy as some people on this forum which is a shame.
