Did my Axi throw up or is this poop?

Unfortunately I have no pics, but I hope this is a good description!

I have black sand in my tank, and this 'pool' of stuff was like a brownish substance buried in the sand and had bits in it. I only know them to poop little pellets, but this is something different. Last night I sucked some sand out and it left a little well that I forgot to fill back in and this stuff was in there.

My water is fine, temp and everything is fine! I'm really concerned. I'm feeding him worms.

I agree with it being poop, it sounds much like the little pools I would see when my axolotl would swim/crawl around and break his poop.
