So I'm going to build a new tank with some spare shelving glass we've had lying around for years dimensions as follows

Glass thickness 5mm
Tank L2440mm x W330mm x H340mm

So basically super long shallow and not very wide it would be filled to a little under the 300mm mark so it should have about 252L

according to Calculate Aquarium Glass Thickness - Custom tanks are great investments | Aquarium Tools this should work I'd like to get some peoples thoughts on this design.

next time please use cm or inches to talk about L W H. Its an interesting approach, its good that its shallow since for axolotls floor area is more important than dept, just make sure its about to fill up with water that will cover your axolotls adult size x2. u should also think about making a mesh lid for the tank since i dont think u can find one for tank of special dimensions, you need the lid to make sure noone jumps out of their tank. overall i like how unique it is and at one point i want to start making my own tanks as well, this is pretty cool. good luck!! post some pics when you are done with it

Sounds pretty good. I've been wanting a long tank like that. I'd make it a little wider just to be sure there was enough room for hides and plants and still plenty of floor space around everything for the axies to wander around. But that's just a matter of how you organize everything and what you prefer. I have no idea whether the glass is thick enough, but one thing you should do is put enough support braces to be sure it won't break apart. And make a sturdy stand for it that can support the weight.

mm is usually used when building stuff etc so nothing wrong with using that. 10 mm = 1 cm so it's not even hard to convert it to cm if you need to do that.

cool, I wish I had a super long tank, my one is quite high and I dislike it. How much is this setting you back?

Lol it is an Australian thing (pretty sure a lot of other countries too) give measurements in mm, not cm or inches. It's an easy conversion from mm to cm - take off a zero.

No idea what the stand will cost to make the glass is free so just have to pay for silicone. I don't expect to pay much over $400 AUD for the stand and lids and silicone.

My only problem with making it wider is the glass that I have is 34cm wide and it would cost me $180 for a base sheet of something a little wider. It will also make it very obtrusive to the room. I'm going to make some custom hides out of rocks and such so that should not be a big problem. It's only a 4cm drop down from what they currently live in but they are gaining 2.4x the ground space which I'm sure they will love.

I will make multiple lids it's quite hot here so I will have a few computer fans mounted on the lids to help cool and at least one mesh lid for the air to escape through.

Well the height is not double that of the length of my axolotls but they will have to leave the bottom to get to the surface.

The height doesn't have to be double the length of you axolotls. It has to be at least the same as your axolotl is long so usually about 30 cm of water is enough.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
