So, as an early x-mas present, my best friend got me a water dog... BEST PRESENT EVER! :p

However, he didn't tell me anything about how to care for it because he "thought I could figure it out."

I found most of the info I need already, I just need to know some options for food, right now I have:

Pellets for small newts and frogs
Crickets
And Mealworms

The best food are earthworms. Go to petsmart, tell them you want night crawlers, and cut one into pieces that will fit into your salamanders mouth. Or dig for smaller worms if you are able to.

Forget mealworms altogether, they are useless nutrition wise and difficult for amphibians to digest, forget crickets for the time being also, Once your water dog has changed into a salamander crickets could be offered occasionally, but as Erin says, worms are best.

When you say dig for smaller worms, do you mean search for a smaller type of worm at pet stores? Or do you mean go outside and literally dig for worms? Sorry for such a stupid question, I just want to be sure I get it right. :p

Awesome, thanks guys. :D

She means dig for them outside.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
