Anyway, I have been looking into the hobby for a while, and it seems really cool. I have a few basic questions:

1. What is a good starter amphibian? I really have no preference on species, or even if it is a newt or a salamander. What do you think is easy to keep?

2. Depending on the amphibian, what would be a good enclosure size? What kind of bedding should it have? What does it eat?

3. Is there anything special I need to know, like common pitfalls or problems beginners run into?

Thanks in advance! :D

1. Some good beginner species are H. cyanurus, P. waltl and C. pyrrhogaster
2. I would recommend using a 20 gallon long. Substrate can be fine sand, bare-bottom, siliconed slate, etc. And the staple diet should be chopped or smaller whole earthworm or nightcrawler, sometimes this can be replaced with a high quality carnivore pellet.
3. The species I described can be kept fully aquatic and require only a small floating land mass, frozen or freeze dried foods are not adequate as a staple diet.

Feel free to ask any further questions

Thanks so much! I already feel welcome in the community.

Good luck! :) I got into it when I found my tiger salamander last September. It's a lot of fun and keeps me busy. I'm wanting to expand and get more sallies and newts.
