I know that earthworms are the best food for axolotls, but I was wondering what else would be a good part of their diet. I am currently raising red wiggles as the staple of my axolotls diet, but could I also regularly feed him pill bugs, grubs, crickets, spiders, or small centipedes and millipedes I find in my yard? I could also get frozen bloodworms as well form the pet store.

Frozen bloodworms are the best. The others have no real use, they could be dangerous to your axolotl if they cause impaction, or leave a nasty bite, it's unlikely but why risk anything? Bloodworms have the added benefit of being easy to defrost whenever you need them.

In the wild axies would eat a variety of invertebrates, insects, larvae and grubs, fish, crustaceans and even an occasional small mammal.

Axies are fine on a diet exclusively of worms, but for variation you can try river or glass shrimp, maggots and grubs as long as they don't have hard jaws (like mealworms), soft insects - woodlice or crickets would be OK, feeder fish (guppies or white cloud minnows). I would avoid centipedes, millipedes, earwigs, spiders etc, and I would steer clear of back yard bugs unless you intend to quarantine them. You can start various bug farms - woodlice and worms are very easy.

Red wigglers taste bad. Belgian earthworms are better food. Cricket legs can cause impaction problems. Feeder fish are a bad idea. They can cause disease. Recently their have been a number of threads on anchor worms. Anchor worms are one of the many problems that feeder fish can cause.

I feed soft moist salmon pellets, live blackworms, frozen bloodworms, and belgian earthworms. Go to axolotl.org for advice on keeping and feeding axolotls.

I read that red wiggles are fine as long as you soak them first. Also, does it matter what species of shrimp I feed my axolotl?

Also, would chichilid sinking pellets with 38 percent protein and 12 percent fat work? Where would I be able to find appropriate salmon pellets?

Rangen makes a moist sinking pellet which is ideal but they're difficult to get ahold of.
I feed tiny guppies which are raised by a private breeder, not a pet store. My Axolotls love them and have never shown signs of disease or impaction :)

Mainly I feed Canadian night crawlers though.

Their is a sticky in the for sale adds for salmon pellets. I sell them in the U.S.

How long would it take for me to use up one bag if I only have one axolotl?

I have had a 1 lb bag of Flymeat pellets for 6 months and have used about 1/3 of it on my juvenile. My trick is to keep a small ziplock baggy to feed out of and keep the rest in an air tight container so it doesn't dry out or get nasty things growing in it. It might expire though.... I should look into that.

Could I store a bag of pellets for a year if I freeze them?

shelf life is 3 to 6 months. fridging or freezing part of a bag will extend the life.

I got a juevineille axolotl 3 days ago. He ate about 6 pellets on the first day, nothing on the second day, 2 small earthworms yesterday, and only one small worm today. Is this normal?

That sounds about right. Don't stuff them. I would back probably off on food a little bit.

Ok. I was just getting a little worried since he ate so much the first day, I expected him to eat around the same amount every day. Guess he just wasn't that well fed at the pet store. Also, is it fine if the water is at 68 degrees because I know that's twards the upper limits of their preferred range?

I recently started using seachem prime to bring down nitrites in my tank. Before I was getting about 1 ppm nitrites and about 10-20 nitrates, after adding the prime my tests shows zero of both. Does using prime affect the tests or is it because the nitrites and nitrates are bonded in a way that the test can't read it? I'm using Api master test kit. And. I know this has nothing to do with this thred.
