Hi !! long time lurker, first post. ive had my current axies for several months now, but not quite a year yet. they were around 2 or so inches when I first got them. they're somewhere around 5 - 7 ish inches now, just kinda guessing by eyeballing it. i had originally thought they were both male, but now I'm having doubts. my darker one had developed white tipped toes too. it's not a huge deal, but i do want to know in case I absolutely need to separate them on the chance of one of them being female and breeding before its ready.

im pretty sure my golden is a male, but please correct me if I'm wrong, definitely not sure about my darker one.

sorry if these pictures are a bit out of focus, the flash kinda does that. any replies are totally appreciated

Could you add some more pictures of the darker one please? While its walking around the tank is best :) A side view and a view from above would be great :) The gold is a male.

Hopefully these are a little more helpful !

I took a few more from other angles, but it's not letting me upload those for some reason, if you'd like those as well I can definitely try uploading those again

Darker should be a girl, you will know for sure if she doesn't develop the 'soccer' ball, truthfully by now she should have if she was a guy. Some folks may argue otherwise still. In addition, girls will start accumulating eggs eventually so she may always seem wider than the boy even though they were eating the same amount.

The darker one looks like it may be female and the golden is for sure a male. But don't trust me... I mis-sexed my axolotls and now they'll bred too early... (I also thought they were both males until 48 hours ago.)

I agree, the golden albino is a male, and I am sure that the wild type is a female.

I'm not so sure the dark one is a female, the body shape seems too slim for me to be convinced. I may be wrong, time will tell :)

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
