Hello! I've used this forum as my main source of information while buying a Spotted Salamander. I received him from a breeder yesterday and since then, he's been in the corner of his tank semi-buried in the substrate. I was wondering when I should worry about feeding him, how to feed him without disturbing him and how I can get him to be better acclimated to his new environment. This is my first salamander and I want him to be as comfortable as possible. Thank you for any advice/help :)

Simply dump the food in, and let the salamander hunt. No need to disturb it first.
I find that spraying the enclosure just before feeding encourages activity.
Thank you! He's been burrowed so he still hasn't eaten but I'm putting food in every other night for him to hunt around for. Hopefully he feels comfortable soon.

I use to keep these guys all the time. I would put a couple inches of organic soil and they would build a tunnel and they would sick their faces out of that tunnel and wait for a worm or bug to come by. But I’ll tell ya now you’ll never see them. As in the wild they stay hidden their wholes lives only coming out to breed.

So since these guys and Tiger salamanders are burrowers you won't see them much at all? I see that fire salamanders aren't burrowers however there are none for sale online.

I have two a. Maculatum and they simply hide under their bark never burrowing. I see them frequently. I kept a. Mavortium before and saw him constantly!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
