New Axolotl- water temperature?

I got my axolotl in the summer months (around three months ago) and I live in a small apartment with no air conditioning so the water temperature was usually around 70-80 F. I wasn’t too worried about the temp being high because my axolotl acted completely normal. Now that it’s getting colder, the water temperature Is around 65 F but he seems to be swimming around less and I find him staying in the same spot for hours at a time. Is it possible that he got used to the warmer water and now that it’s getting colder it’s making him uncomfortable? I’m not sure if I should change the water temp with a heater or just let him get used to the cold. Thank you to anyone who has advice :)

When water temperature/parameters are off i.e. high axolotls get frantic and seem very busy.

They are normally quite lazy creatures especially as they age.
I have 10 tanks and countless tubs, my breed stock adults are like water cows, they saunter around but pic a fave spot and pose. The younger juveniles explore and swim and then find a spot to perch and pose.

You really want to keep temp from 15-18 degrees Celsius or 58-66 degrees Fahrenheit
Warm water for prolonged periods can cause health issues and potentially death. Fungus, bloating, uncontrollable floating, more susceptible to infections.

How are you other parameters?
ammonia
nitrite
nitrate
pH

Everything else is fine, I check and change the water about weekly. His skin, gills, and color are also all normal. He’s generally pretty lazy but I think I’ve just noticed him being extra still lately and I’m not sure why.

First, that super high water temp from summer, that's not good. What I did was get like 6 small, hard ice packs. I have string wrapped around their top and I float them in a big gallon freezer bag, that way they don't risk leaking, and the string prevents them from wandering about the surface. For emergencies, I use a few frozen water bottles. I mount them the same way because when they liquify, they can sink and pin down axolotls. The string prevents them from doing so but they seem to cool the tank pretty quick. Never hurts to just have those around. My axolotl dealt with like 66-70 degree water temp most of the summer because of the heatwave. I too, do not have air conditioning so I know how hard it is. Axolotls prefer like 55-65 degree water.

Second, do you test your axolotl's water parameters? I deeply recommend you get an API brand Freshwater Master Kit (got mine of Amazon for 30 bucks I think). Axolotls need low ammonia, like 0, low nitrites, and nitrates between 20 and 60, I think. There's a scale on the back of the directions on how to read them. It's hard to get the tank cycled properly because of it just taking a ton of time. If there's too much ammonia, your axolotl will get skin burns kinda, chemical ones, if there's too many nitrites, they were become very lethargic. I just had to deal with my axolotl's tank cycle. I reset it to deal with another issue and there were 2 weeks there I was doing a 5 gallon water change every other day, to keep her nitrites down. It makes them REALLY lethargic, like, when I pulled her out to tub her while I cleaned, she didn't fight me but the second she got into cool, clean water, she came back to life and was very pleased. High nitrates, I forget what they do, I think they deprive the water of oxygen or something. I am a major novice with this, I only know what I've written down from what others have told me.

Third, post some pics of your little guy! I wanna seeeeee. What size tank do you have and what kind of bottom? I have some ultra fine sand. I hope you know to not have any gravel in there since axolotls will eventually suck in some of the gravel when they go to feed. I'm just very curious and want to know how things are, from one new axolotl owner to another.

That was very helpful, thank you! I must admit I neglect to check for nitrates and ammonia, but I do change the water weekly and make sure there’s no chlorine. I use tiles instead of a substrate and have a 20 gallon tank. Lately I’ve noticed he’s been swimming around a lot or going in hiding spots, and he eats regularly. Not so worried about him anymore but I am a new axolotl mom so I just want to make sure I’m doing everything right :)

Popping in on this conversation, may I ask where you got your rock decoration? I’ve been looking for decor to upgrade my lotls tank! Your lotl is adorable!! I would recommend checking all your parameters weekly except PH

Aw that's good. When they hide and are all secretive, that's them being the wild creatures they are. Mine hides sometimes and pokes her head out to see what's going on then decides to go back into her hole. I love how your little guy has such long gill stalks.

Same with my girl😂 when I walk by she’ll stick her head out, and then when I disappear from her view she’ll duck back into her pvc😂😂

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
