Arp the Axolotl is recovering from fungal infection. Today her tail seems bent as in photo. Her mouth is black as well. I tested the water, and it was safe for her. Anyone have any idea why shes like that?

Do you have any photos of her from above? And any close ups of her mouth? Is it a row of blackish colored stuff along the inside of her jaw?

Yes I do. I don’t have a close up of her mouth though. I’ll go get one now, here’s on of her from above.

First the black part of on the mouth, to me, that looks like their underdeveloped teeth. My axolotl has a row of bottom "teeth-like" things that are that color. I've seen others that have them. However, the bigger concern is the missing gill stalks on the right side. What happened? As for the tail being bent, the tail looks fine to me.

Thank you for letting me know!!

The gill was eaten by fungal infection. BUT she’s getting better. The pet shop owners had her like that and said it was normal. But it’s treated and gone, and her gill is slowly growing back. Thank you for the concern. I had help from others they told me what should help her get better, and it’s working!

I'm glad your axie is recovering.

But, accepting to buy an ill animal from the pet shop sends a very bad message :
The pet shop owner understand it's not important to keep his animals healthy and is encouraged to continue like this.
No ! It is not normal for an axolotl to have a gill suffring from a gill infection.

Yep, we were really upset. But now I’m happy! I have an axolotl I love very much!

@JoyJiang

Thank you for rescuing that axolotl. I hate how pet stores treat their animals. More product than living creature...

Glad your little guy is doing well though.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
