Mine ignores mine, but I like it. Plus having more plants reduces the nitrates. Be cautious about when they split though, maybe I'm just helicopter parenting but I get nervous seeing mine suck back worms with all the small chokey bits around

ive studied this extensively and have come to the conclusion that small bits of pebbles (less than or at 1mm) is alright for axolotls. i believe them to be gastroliths, as she seems to be healthier and has more complete bowel movements since we switched from fine sand to pebbles. i dissect her waste for pebbles to ensure she passes them, and she does so fine. i personally am confident in my decision, but understand your hesitation - i’d suggest extensive research over gastroliths and acknowledging that in the wild axolotls likely eat small pebbles and rocks every now and then
