Axolotl always at top of tank

Hi recently my axolotl has been spending a lot of time resting on a leaf very near to the top of my tank, what could this mean?
today he was even closer than usual to the top with his head almost breaking the water.

Is this a sudden behavior? Basically what I'm asking is how long you've had your axolotl vs. how long it has been doing this. Some axolotls like to hang out at the top of the tank, but this could also be a sign of something wrong. Has it displayed any other unusual behaviors? Are the gills curled forward or is the tail bent?
