Hi everyone, just finished feeding my axolotls to realise one of them seems to be hurt pretty badly. I dont know what could have happen. He doesnt use it’s leg at all when swiming nor standing on it. Have you ever seen something like this? I know axolotls can regenerate parta of their bodies, but do you think he could get trough this?

You wrote 'axolotls' - you've got more than one in there? That sure looks like he was bitten by a tank mate during feeding. I just had to separate my two fully grown ones for the very same reason - so, yeah, I have seen something like this. My two sometimes get uncomfortably close to each other during feeding. I would suggest a tank divider or putting them in separate tanks. As long as your water quality is good and there is no sign of infection, he will recover.

Thanks i like to read that it will be fine. It’s weird though, they have been together for almost a year and never had anyone bite nor scratched and they are always side to aide and curled up together. First time it happens. I think i will keep them in the same tank still but if something ever happens again i’ll separate them

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
