Help!!! I was giving my axolotl a salt bath because I saw an old video of him 3mon ago and his gills looked a lot fluffier than now. When I put him in the tub with salt he wondered around and then swallowed a piece! I'm freaking out! please help!

why was the salt not dissolved before putting your axolotl in?, also why was you giving your axolotl a salt bath?
your axolotl will be fine and shouldn't have a issue with a bit of salt.

I didn't know that it had to be dissolved before putting it in. I just put in a low dose of salts. the reason I did this was because I was looking at a video of my Axolotl a few months ago and noticed that the gills in that video were very fluffy. When I checked on my Axolotl right now I noticed that they were definitely not as fluffy as they were. I decided to give a small salt bath while I tested the ammonia to make sure everything was okay. It was just one piece, but I'm not sure if that's going to harm him at all. I'm sorry there was no context in the post, I was very paranoid in a rush.

salt baths will help injuries and fungus, they wont help get fluffier gills.
good water oxygenation will help promote large fluffy gills, and will discourage them from gulping air and then floating.

Thanks, I'd also like to mention my Axolotl is 6 1/2 in. He is not a full grown adult yet.

depending on how big he will get he's probably half way there.
So the salt will be fine? He didn't eat yesterday, but I think thats cause I ran out of nightcrawlers so I was using feeding pellets (which were tiny compared to him).

yes the salt will be fine, axolotls are a brackish moderate to hard water animals and are meant to have a certain amount of salt and minerals in the water anyway. if you go to Axolotls: The Fascinating Mexican Axolotl and the Tiger Salamander there is all information from feeding to water parameters and the type of salts and minerals to keep them happy and healthy.

Thank you so much! I thought I knew more about axolotls then I really did, i'll be taking a trip to the aquarium shop this weekend to get a low-flow air Stone, some worms, and some of those minerals you're talking about. I'll definitely have to look into them. Thanks so much!
