Overhead sumps and spone filters are soft flow and are pretty good. If your friend will get an external canister filter i reccomend sunsun 303. Price ranges from $50-$100 and its actually soft flow and a great filter

Yes, I'd agree that sponge filters and Overhead sumps are the best.
