your aquarium is fantastic. I was told not to put fine sand or grains in bottom of tank because they can swallow it and it gets stuck. Is this not right?
 
Sand is fine to use as a substrate because its small enough to be safely passed by the animal if some is ingested. It only becomes a problem if your axolotl is just eating sand by the mouthfull, some axolotls for whatever reason will do this and you have to find alternatives for substrate or have a bare bottom. You want to stay away from gravel or rocks that can fit in their mouth, this is where the most danger lies with your average axolotl.
