I have a couple islands that are supposed to "float" because they are attached by suction cups to the side of the tank...after a while, the suction cups lose their suck. I fixed them by putting styrofoam inside them, that way they can also float around the tank instead of having to stick to the walls.
Now all I need is the wrist strength to pull those useless suction cups out of the holes...

It seems strange they are not solid, the ones I have are and they float perfectly, they stick well too :p
I think maybe you are meant to trap air in the hollow bit in order to make it float, however this is poorly designed, as you are likely to get a build up of bad gases if you leave it like that too long. Be careful bits of polystyrene don't break off and make there way around the tank!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
