These pictures are adorable!

I'm wondering what kind of hide you have because I had one that looked almost just like it for a while and had to take it out IMMEDIATELY. The one I had was the ExoTerra brand, and I was reassured by two pet store owners that it was totally safe to be underwater. I found out after it had been in my tank for a couple weeks that it actually had PAINT COMING OFF. It only came off when I rubbed against it when I was cleaning the tank. I took it out and sure enough, there was paint coming off it. I got it out of there as quickly as I could. You may want to check and make sure that yours doesn't do the same thing. Mine didn't start doing it until it had been in there for a while.

Oh my god! It is the same brand! I only got it yesterday, and they said it would be fine :( Would I be able to sand the paint off or maybe coat it in something? It is such a perfect hide otherwise, and she looves it!
Maybe I could return it..

I have the same hides. They love it by the way. One is pretty old and the other one is a few months old. The old hide is paler and uglier than the new one. (Paint has come off slightly and it's a bit blue because I've used some blue medicine once and now its blue-green-greyish. More like something that has been in a jungle for 323425 years with moss on it). The new one is still brown and awesome looking.

And Goldilocks like to poop in there (and it's all goo-ey when I finally find it...).

Some hidey cave pictures:
1. Frangipane 2 (when she was a young axie)
2. Pangifrane
3. Spotl being awesome
4. Goldilocks (ready to take a poop I guess..........)
5. Toasty

I wouldn't worry if it's just been in there a day. Mine was in my little guy's tank for a couple weeks. I did try to scrub all of the paint off.....it does come off, so the whole thing is the same color as the inside of it. BUT I couldn't get the paint out of the cracks (the indentations or whatever you want to call them)....so I got rid of it (which sucks because he really liked it!).

Maybe it's okay for you to keep in there, but it terrified me to think that paint would rub off on him if he rubbed against it....

So you don't think the paint would hurt them? They obviously seem fine (as did my little guy), but I can't imagine that being good for them. But I trust you...your posts on here have been tremendously helpful for me. :)

This is what it looks like after being scrubbed (just with a sponge). Like I said, I tried everything to get the paint out of the creases--and couldn't. If I had known the paint wouldn't come off of all of it, I would have just coated it with something. Now it's not looking it's best. :/

I'll wait and see if anyone has any suggestions as to putting some covering on it. Maybe there's some waterproof/non-toxic thing I can paint or spray on..
Also that hide is slightly different to mine, though I did see them in store! I've got a picture here. It's the same brand, so it's probably made from the same stuff ha

I went to their website but it doesn't say whether it's waterproof or not /sigh.. maybe I'll send them an email!
In our tropical fish tank we have had one of those big shipwrecks, and most of the paint has come off that. All the fishes are fine, but I imagine axys are more sensitive.. A lil' bit of paint wouldn't be too bad (like the bits left in the cracks of yours), but i'll keep an eye on it and do something about it if I need to :)

It's such a perfect hide otherwise!

Wow! I have one of these. It came with a fish tank last year. Definitely going to use it in Blip's tank. The paint must have come off it a long time ago, there's no sign of any. It was green with 'stuff' from the water when I got it but I've never used it so it probably just needs a bit of a scrub. Lucky Blip :D

It's just a glass ball with bubbles captured in it - I've had it for years & it's such a dust collector - it's never looked so good as it does underwater :)

Love it! I thought it had a light in it because it looked like it was illuminating! I actually think I've got one laying around somewhere, I might have to add it.
Your axies are gorgeous by the way!

The light is above it & it's really come alive :) I hope you find one too - they were all the rage back in the 80's ;)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
