You can't see it in these pics I guess but there's a little lump between legs and then the one in the picture behind the legs so I'm a little confused thanks for looking

Hi Liz-
From what I've seen it is usually pretty obvious if its a male! ? My axies are not a year yet- probably in spring I think. They are big but their nether-regions all look the same. You may need to wait a bit more!

Thank you and yes I've noticed the same looking at adult axolotl pictures on a search engine recently I want eggs eventually so I was just wondering what I had but I need to work on my patience :)

I'd guess male, can you get a birds eye?

It's also slimmer than my other ones and eats the same amount so I don't know might still be too soon but thank you for helping maybe you can tell something by the pictures

Looks more like a female to me. A male has much bigger "lumps".

Above is male, below is female.

I looks like a female in my opinion but they have been known to suddenly produce 'man parts' at 18-24 months! :D

I think it's a male that is about to become mature enough to breed in a month or two.

I'm not familiar with Axies but i am familiar with other ambystomids and it looks like a male to me. -Seth

Would be great if he was ready to breed in a month..so excited

I'm leaning toward female.

Uh oh I'm really hoping male lol

Well- sincere last post two of my lotls have begun to show their masculinity!!! Lol

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
