Ambystoma marvolum/tigrinum?

Hi all,

Ive recently bought a pair of tiger salamanders, but im unsure which species they are. How do you identify between the species/subspecies? (there should be a photo attached below)

Where did you get them from, do you know anything about their history? It's not always possible to tell just from their patterns as there are often variations within a species according to exact location of origin.

My first impression of your pic says A. mavortium. Not sure which subspecies though.

If you Google images of Ambystoma you should come up with loads of pics of different patterns and subspecies.
 
To me, it looks like tigrinium, as this subspecies has the barring, but smaller and generally more, while barreds have bigger bars, which kind of makes them more "Noticeable"
 
I'd lean towards Ambystoma tigrinum. The pattern is more spotted and the snout seems to be slightly hooked downward. Do you have more pictures? It's got to be from an eastern or northern species.

You can't go wrong with saying its a (Ambystoma tigrinum) at the point.
 
Awesome :) thanks. Looking at photos of tigrinum it does look the most like them. The fact that their markings are quite small threw me off

That's what I was saying, Tigrinum tends to have small less noticeable markings, while Mavitorium tends to have bigger, brighter and generally more noticeable
 
Sorry reading that back ive realised how badly ive phrased it, i was saying that from the pictures ive seen (i was comparing within tigrinum) theres a very large variation in patterns so i was finding it tricky matching patterns from the photos.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
