Frog evolution linked to mass extinction event

An interesting amphibian news piece based on research published in the journal PNAS recently. The study reveals that 88% of all modern frog species were possibly the result of the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. The rapid diversification is thought to...

    Let's see those tools

Over the years I've tried all kinds of tools and gadgets to assist in cleaning and feeding newts. Everything from battery powered syphons to home made pooters, but I always fall back on a handful of trusty tools. It struck me that few of the items I use regularly are actually intended for use...

    UK to EU Shipping options

I'm looking for some recommendations for shipping newts both in the UK and overseas. I'm assuming there are courier companies here who'll take live animals for a price and deliver next day within the UK? What do people do about sending newts overseas i.e. other EU countries? I've used regular...

    Time lapse N.kaiseri

A short time lapse of some of this years N.kaiseri. It was shot on my phone using iMotion. The video nicely demonstrates the desire for cover. These timid newts do not like to be exposed. Kaiseri Time Lapse - YouTube

    Keeping kaiseri metamorphs aquatic

Has anyone tried forcing kaiseri metamorphs to remain aquatic? I'm raising a few hundred and the first batch of morphs crawled up the walls but within a couple of days went back to the water and haven't left since. Aquatic morphs will be much easier with regards to space and food.

North America - Epic New Wildlife Documentary

Here's a shameless plug for a new wildlife documentary series about North America I've been involved with for the past year or so. It's produced by Wild Horizons, who are based in the offices I work in Bristol and has been overseen by some of the great folks that brought us Planet Earth, so...

    Tubifex supplier

Can anyone recommend a tubifex supplier in the UK? My regular supplier appears to have closed down. I'm preferably looking for someone who can supply good numbers via post and not overly expensive. So many mouths to feed

The Dark Side of Species Discovery

This was shared by Amphibiaweb on Facebook today. It's an old article which may've been posted here before but it was the first time I'd read it so thought I'd share. It's a transcription of an interview with the scientist who discovered the Laos newt and makes for pretty depressing reading...

    Newts in a Beer Barrel

My alpine newts were, up until recently, living in a rubber tub in the garden but after a few sub zero nights with ice forming on the surface I took pity on them so fished them out (freezing cold hands + much swearing when they evaded capture) and brought them indoors. I didn't have a tank...

    Is sand really nutritious?

This larva thinks so! I've never seen so much sand in a larva before. This is an Ommatotriton larva kept on bog standard aquarium sand. None of it's siblings, of which there are hundreds, seem to have such a taste for it. After I took this photo I fed it a large bloodworm which it inhaled into...

    Indre, France in April

I've spent the last week in the Indre region of France hiking in some of my favourite forests and wooded river valleys. Salamandra salamandra terrestris larvae are very abundant at this time of year, appearing in most small pools, troughs and puddles. Adults are harder to find, mostly hiding...

How to make a lid for an outdoor tub

I've built a few lids for outdoor tubs and thought I'd share the build process for my favourite design. Before you embark on a project like this you should know that it's a fiddly task that may take a few hours and will certainly require power tools. For me a lid requires the following...

    N.strauchii larval deformity

Has anyone else seen this deformity before? The tail grows at right angles to the body. I've raised thousands of larvae of various species over the years and only ever seen this twice, both times in N.strauchii.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
