From what i know i dont think there chinese fire bellies all newts have different coloration and that goes for the same species they look like japanese fire bellied to me i dont think its a chinese fire belly

hard to tell from the pics ( could be sub species) but they both look very like cynops orientalis to me, the top one (the smaller one) is definitely a male too. don't worry about the difference in colour, that is just nature :)

They're both Hypselotriton orientalis. The bigger one is problably older female, and the belly color is very variable among this species, ranging from pale to almost red.

They are both C/H. orientalis (chinese fire bellies). I have a breeding group and the females are almost twice the size of my males. If one were a Japanese (pyrrhogaster) then it would have a different patterned belly, not necessarily a different colour.

I agree that an unvaried diet may have contributed to the difference in colouration. All juveniles of this species start off with yellow bellies and turn red as they accumulate the products within their food items. Try feeding them plenty of bloodworm and brine shrimp in their diet and their bellied should redden more and look more even.

They look like a good pair though, good luck.

TY, The female has been puttin on weight constantly and eating tons, I have removed the gravel to avoid it be ingested, have also added a few live plants and fitted cooling fans. Ty for the info :) :)
