My questions have kind of answerd themselves over time. I posted the "I've got eggs" message - which no one really seemed interested in except for mik - thanks mik. Any way she's finally stopped laying and she's by herself recovering now, how long should i leave her there? She was so so hungry!!! I gave her a few earth worms - her favourite! and some beef, chicken, meal worms and axolotl food. Is chicken ok to give them, this was the first time - I just thought that it might be easier on their little tummies than beef??? She seems a little pale, is this normal? She4's pretty active and she's doing all the normal things, just a slightly off colour, then again if i just layed 250+ eggs in a space of 32 hours then i would be looking a bit pale too i imagine!!! lol! Anyway I'll keep you posted with ho it's all going.

Hi Mary,

My female also laid eggs all over the place last week, unfortunately only one baby made it past the hatching point ... better luck next time and i'll probably be better prepared :)

Anyway, i believe that the slight loss of colour is probably due to the energy spent laying eggs. Mine for instance also has somewhat lighter gills and is eating about 150-200% of her 'normal' diet at the moment. I guess this will settle down back to normal in the next couple of days.

As for your question about diet. I'm not a specialist but I wouldn't give my axis all too much of mammal meat.

After all, they are water creatures and its highly unlikely that they walk across a chicken or a beef to bite one piece off in their natural habitat ;-). I'm feeding them with Indiana's University Pellets and occasionally, I would give them a guppy or some small fish.

I only found out yesterday that mammal meat wasn't too good for them, but I thought that chicken would be ok cause it's a white meat and chickens arn't mammals! Also it has alot of protien, which would be good for her just after she's layed eggs. Right/Wrong???

I have fed them guppies before, they liked chasing them round the tank and I'm going to get some more from a dam on sunday arvo (i have to get some water fleas for the babies when they hatch) So it'll be 2 weeks or so before they can eat them, cause I slowly change the water from muddy dam water to fresh water, to make sure they don't have any diseases, and this time I'm going to keep some to breed as food.

mammal meat - like liver or beef heart - is fine for them in small doses, like maybe once a week. in my experience, they love it

ive had a couple of guppies in my tank for a week and one in oswolds tank. i had 3 originally in the big tank so one went but they dont seem interested in them. or the guppies are good at hiding. so theyre kind of part of the family now. but i dont want to name them incase they do get eaten id feel to guilty.

red meat gives them constipation, they realy love worms as a treat every now n then, and after thatt, mine wont stop swiming.
