I'd like to share some photos of my darling Smooth Newts. I've been tending my garden pond for four years to encourage them and the wild population has exploded. This year I took a few eggs for observation and most of them hatched and were returned. I kept these five to watch them metamorphose.
As long as I can keep them happy and healthy they will stay with me.
You can see the red on the neck? I believe this is the gills as the red faded over a couple of days. Each new land walker had the red.
I've learned a lot about them in the 5 months they have been alive. Like how prehensile their tails are and what rocks they prefer to hid under (slate).
They are so so tiny they almost do not register on these scales! I've started weighing them when taking them out of the tank to clean it.
