55g Filter?

Could somebody please throw out a couple suggestions?

Personally, I would use a canister filter on any tank that large. My favorite are the Fluvals (low flow rate and large capacity for media).

I know I shouldn't be talking cheap considering my newts, but what would be the dissadvantage(s) of using a submersibal filter. Once again I'm planning far in advance, so I might be able to come up with $120 after I get out of school.
