Now before we begin I must stress that my axolotl Darwin, is healthy and enjoying everything as if this scenario never happened, but I thought I would share this nightmare story I had with my axolotl a few weeks ago.

When feeding my axolotl nice wiggly worms which he enjoy very much, he gobbled up one worm in particular in the furious style he does with all worms, but in this case to my horror the worm didn't want to stay down and started looking for an escape. The worm found this escape in the small gap between my axies body and his gills, wiggling around coming out I didn't know what to do, but it got worse, as the worm grabbed the attention of Darwin. My axolotl didn't seemed phased that he had a worm escaping him and he attacked this worm as he would any other, so with the worm coming out of his gills he had it looped in his mouth again. I didnt know whether I should leave him, get him out and take some scissors to the worm or what  I just looked on.

Fortnately though, in the end Darwin managed to easily get the worm back into his mouth and quickly into his stomach without any damage at all and at last I could breathe easy.

I could see how that might scare a person who hasn't encountered the gill flap phenomenon before. I'm glad all is well.

Your poor thing you would've freaked I know I would've.

Although I can't wait to see the gill flap phenomenon, (as John called it). I've heard about it and haven't seen it yet. But am totally amazed that it does happen and the axie is not even bothered his food just went down the wrong way, and it's now wiggling out the side of his neck:DHehehehe

I'm kinda hoping it will happen while my sister is babysitting them for me. :proud: Just for a laugh at her reaction, she's already funny about feeding them live worms for me hehehe.

Wow!
I did not know they have a gill flap!
Is it like in fish?

Basically like fish, yes. Most people aren't aware of it because the external gills hide them from view pretty well. I've seen this 'gill flap phenomenon' several times. If you look at an axolotl at the right angle you might catch a glimpse of the opening.

Wow, awesome.
I have to watch out for it.
You learn something new every day...
:D

I've had the same thing happen. Looks like a giant worm piercing. lol. Jake knows what I'm talking about.
