Hello there,

A while ago my axolotl hurt his leg and he's slowly been recovering in the fridge (he's been there since last September! Is that too long? I didn't want to risk fungus).
Anyway he had fungus which ate away at his skin and his toes dropped off before I beat the fungus.

I really just wanted to check that experts thought he was doing ok too. There's no fungus now or anything and he's eating/pooing normally in the fridge.
Do these pics look like he's doing ok and well on the road to recovery?

As long as he's eating and digesting, the length of time in the fridge is not a problem. I would say keep him there. However, the limb does not look good. I think those are bones protruding where the toes used to be, and the leg looks swollen. He may still have some kind of infection in the limb. Does this look better than it did previously, or staying the same?

can you get a vet to take the leg off above the infection? it looks horrible and if thats looking better i would have hated to be you when he was worse. im worried over slightly pale gills so it must be much worse for you

I haven't got any photos of that.

Yep we think they're bones too - but weren't sure if they were just slowly re-growing w the skin gradually growing over them. They do look quite yellow but wasn't sure if that was normal. Are the toes not growing back normally; should I ask the vet to try and take the foot bit off?

I'm not sure the leg's swollen though - it looks about the same as the other one - here's a photo with both in...

I thought maybe the dark bit on the leg was his skin growing back w the pigmentation growing back?

if he was mine i would seek the advice of a vet. maybe find out what colour healthy bone is. its so hard because its a risk either way and i guess he cant be that happy in the fridge.

i used yell.com to find some vets which specialise in reptiles/exotic pets. not pasted well im afraid. try them. also if you put axolotl into yell it finds 3 pet shops that have them as a search word. maybe someone can give you some advice. i would think you need to get the wound closed before you can put him back in the tank.

Thanks Shelly for the info, i shall have a ring round local vets and see if they've heard of axolotls!

I say take to a vet just to make shure. Besides the leg it looks great good and fat

I would get it amputated because with a nice clean cut the whole leg can grow bac kt ofull size (most of the time).

I had a "rescue" axolotl that had bone sticking out of his leg and no toes. It took over a half year for the leg and toes to grow back. I thought it wouldn't because it looked nasty. I just medicated for a couple weeks and let nature take it's course. I think an amputation might slow things down and risk more infection. Sometimes it is tough to tell if an old wound is healing or getting worse.
