Today our new Axy arrived and was added to our existing tank. We already have one 10cm Axy, and the new 1 is honestly EXACTLY the same size. I was so pleased when I saw them side by side as I know size differences can cause issues. My next worry was that my boy hasn't seen another animal for a LONG time, with the exception of food!

I fed my guy today so he wouldn't be hungry, and the new one (I'm told) was also fed today.

Unfortunately introductions have been a little tense. The new one seems curious and happy exploring, but every time they come together 1 gulps/nips blindly at the other and they both zoom off in opposite directions. No 'holding on' yet, thank goodness!

No injuries so far, but I'm a bit anxious.
It's there anything I can do? Or is this just the normal process?

Here is their first meeting:

I don't have a way to separate them in the tank, so I made sure there were PLENTY of high and low hiding places.

even as adults axolotls will still give warning nips and argue over food (food fighting isn't related to size as a smaller axolotl is as likely to nip a larger axolotl when it comes to food) they just won't aggressively hunt each other like they are prone to when younger.
ensure that there are plenty of hides/caves that they can get away from each other when needed.

Thanks!
I've raised leopard geckos and other lizards for decades, so it's really strange finding myself right back at the beginning it tends of understanding a species.

Hopefully they settle down a bit. For now they both seem really surprised at seeing another Axy! Keep sneaking up and giving each other jump scares 😂

Update: while there is still the odd half hearted nip between them, I have also seen them pass/touch each other and move off peaceful a few times now. Fingers crossed it's going in the right direction 🤞🤞
