Adopted axie boney and not eating

Sounds like you and your hubby are such a good team, I bet Oliver sees you as his heroes ☺

Looking forward to hearing about his progress.

We said goodbye to Oliver this afternoon, I just think we got to him too late!

On looking him over I noticed a large lump at the base of his jaw... Possibly a growth?? He also looked to have some food in his belly, poor little thing, at least he had a quiet place to die... The kids were particularly upset as they like myself were very hopeful

RIP Oliver

Thank you for all he advice out there it's certainly made the last few days less stressful

I will follow up with the petshop and once again ask them to consider the conditions their supplier sends the axies in... And express my disappointment in them waiting so long to seek assistance, they have my number if they get anymore sick axies, I don't want to nurse another one in the same condition, early treatment is the key to recovery... I'm too upset to be angry at this point...

:( oh hon I'm so sorry

I'm sure Oliver was well beyond help before he got to you

you can take solice knowing that he would have been overwhelmed with the love from you & all your family. At least he got to experience being loved (even for a brief moment!) for the first time in his his life :) *joy*

I know exactly how it feels to get your hopes up or at least have hope that you can make the difference & bring them back from the borderline - I'm really sorry you all had to experience the disappointment (especially the kids!)

I'm glad your going to talk with the shop Oliver came from  good luck keeping calm - it's got me fuming!!

I've given my number to a few stores around Sydney as an axolotl carer / rescuer hoping they'll call before it gets too bad - sadly the axolotls come into the store in terrible condition & it just gets worse while they're there :(
The stores are used to seeing axolotls with no gills / limbs & thin as pencils!

Apparently there's a fish hatchery out your way that has awful looking axolotls in mass tanks    I'm thinking of dropping in one day for a tour & will take a hidden camera to video it incase I need to make a report.

Take care honey - know that you did your very best for him & he would've appreciated the efforts very much :)

RIP Oliver - be at peace with a full belly!
Rainbow bridge is your hide now :(

I'm sorry for your loss :(
You did your best. Perhaps the pet shops need to go through the experience of dealing with dying axolotls if they are ever going to stop purchasing from those suppliers.

Perhaps we need to do a bit of social action.... perhaps we should sell caudata calendars in pet shops so that people can see what a healthy axolotl should look like. Or at least provide a visual aid, a booklet perhaps with pictures of nice chubby healthy axolotl with gills. The general public just don't know what axolotls are meant to look like. That is one of the main reasons that those pet shops get away with making money from emanciated animals.

Fish hatchery??? Maybe we could meet for coffee... Thanks for the support Nicki and Kerry, muchly appreciated, I will be checking the store more regularly now :( very sad evening here

I have to agree with you Kerry, people don't know... A photo on the glass of a healthy axie with a care sheet attached would certainly help! Care sheets are the key

I'm so sorry.

You did everything you could to save him.

Rest in Peace, Oliver.

Perhaps we need to produce a book for pet shops to buy for their shelves. Just a cheap little manual with care information, info on how to test water etc... The pet shops would probably be happy as they would financially benefit from selling the tanks, filters, hides, test kits etc... that are recommended. And of course lots of pretty pictures of well loved axies. Then they will have to actually source well cared for axies because people will want them.

I'm 7/8 of the way there with regards to an axolotl care sheet - but my computers name must be Fritz (issues!) & it's been a tough couple if months here with loosing our boy dobe :(

I'll get on to it over Easter & see if we all put our heads together what we can come up with :)

Doing it for all the Oliver's & Spooky Boo's who've ignited our passion / anger :D /

This madness has to stop!
People would scream blue murder if puppies & kittens were as emaciated in a pet shop! Should be the same for lotls.

Also I've had a tip from a politician that axolotls should not exempt from the ban on selling reptiles & amphibians in pet shops - there's a chance (waiting for confirmation) that axolotls / salamanders are not legally permitted to be sold in stores in NSW :)
Fingers crossed - here's hoping! :D

Well it is not even legal to put adverts in the amphibians section of Gumtree. It would be a wonderful thing if people needed to find their axolotls from breeders instead. We really do have big issues here in Oz.

The pic is so sad but with your determination I see you will get Oliver back to being healthy. Just wanted to say how proud I am of you for what your doing. Bless xxx

I posted this before realizing he's passed. God bless him and you should still be proud of yourself for trying in vain to save him. And definitely speak to the vet in question. I don't think he would be allowed to do business in the UK if that's the way he treated his animals!

Sorry to hear poor little Oliver has passed, you really gave him your very best love and care whilst he was with you :(

Just a quick side note - thought I heard on the news that they were changing laws in NSW to allow Pet Stores to sell Turtles and reptiles to bring the state into line with other states ..... Countless animals potentially exposed to ignorance and neglect at the hands of those wanting to make a quick dollar ! makes me sooooo mad

Thank you everyone for the discussion, a book is a great idea... Or even advocating for petshops to use books already written... Will have to investigate and see if there is an Australian one... Another options is a supply of business cards with web addresses... There is a lot of infor already out there, people just need help to access the right info! Let me know when your heading out this way Nicki? And I'll drive down and meet you, Windsor markets are lovely on sun? Depends when hatchery is open xx
