Almost dead urgent help needed

What is the hardness of your water?
 
Well I've only got test strips but they say between 8-16.

When I looked into that it said it only causes temporary anaemia and wasn't life threatening :(

They have both unfortunately passed now.
 
it may mean it wont be fatal to adults :( i am so sorry for your losses
 
I fell better knowing it wasnt me just not caring for them properly, but i guess these things happen, ive spent hours on google looking for something similar and cant find any information, due to the daphnia dying when i put it in their container ive come to the conclusion that it was the lotls themselves and they were infecting the water.

They went really pale, then they became paralysed but their heart was still beating, then eventually they died open mouths and very white.
 
So i just went and got my 'cycling' tanks water tested and they said the PH was dangerously low and it was the palest yellow on the chart, maybe that could have been the problem with the babies?
 
It sounds like the low PH caused the anemia. You seem to have worked out what went wrong. Did the tap water have low PH? Mine is 7.2 out of the tap. You may find it safer to use tap water if it is OK next time around. If it is too low there are methods to raise it. I'm sorry that you've been through all of this.
 
Yes i think that has been the problem, i think i pickled them to death :O

Ive tested my pond water and that has a Ph of around 8.0 but a slightly higher reading of NO3 at 25, so ive mixed some of that in with my juvies regular water to hopefully raise the PH slightly.

Im honestly just relieved that ive figured out the problem and can change it before it effected my juvie too!

Was the tank cycled or cycling?

I'm not sure using pond water or aquarium water can be better than
aged (24-48hrs) dechlorinated tap water for water changes especially for the young ones.

I'm so sorry to read of your losses :(
hopefully now you know what the probable cause was, it won't rear it's ugly head again.

Well I'd been trying to cycle it for 6 weeks. On Monday I added daphnia in to see if they survived, and they did so I went to get it tested to see if it was now cycled
Everything came back fine except the PH so I did a 70% water change.

I didn't use just pond water, I just mixed a bit in to try and raise the Ph but today I'm going to buy some crushed coral and just use tap water on its own :happy:

You still need to dechlorinate the tap water - not just on its own :eek:

Haha i meant without any pond water i always use dechlorinator ( API stress coat)
