Hi

I was just wondering if it was common for the anderson's salamander to foul the water. What I mean is, I've got a pair of juveniles, and every so often, usually once a week, algae starts to form on the glass panel of the tank. It's happened a couple of times now, I do partial water changes and clean the algae off, clean the filter etc, but the problem hasn't stopped. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this issue.

Re: Ambystoma Andfersoni

The constant cleaning is probably what´s causing the problem. If you don´t allow the tank to cycle and mature, algae will never be under control.
The best solution for algae blooms and also a substitute for filters, are huge quantities of live plants.

Hi,

I second Azhael's comment.

I've found the easiest live plants to maintain in aquaria are floating plants such as duckweed, or the beautiful aquatic ferns in the genus Salvinia. Frogbit and water lettuce are also great. Of these four, some thrive well in certain tanks. Therefore I would attempt to introduce all four into your Ambystoma tank, and just wait and see which plants thrive in those conditions!

I have never kept these floating plants with any herps (just fish), but I can't predict any problems that might crop up...

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
