Hello - I'm new here.

I have always been fascinated by amphibians & reptiles (esp. snakes!). I have an amphibian friendly garden, containing a healthy population of the rare & protected Great Crested Newt.

When I moved to where I live now, almost 25 years ago, there were no frogs or toads evident (probably due to being surrounded by intensive agriculture). I advertised for, & reared frog spawn for 2 years. In the last few years, the agricultural fields have been set-s-side, and I now have good populations of at least 2 species (probably 3) of British newt, plus frogs & toads.

I have recently started a job as 'Biology Technician' at a senior school, and presently there are no creatures in the department, only a few required plants. The previous incumbant had no particular interest in creatures. (Please see my profile for assurance that I / we will NOT harm any creatures we keep!!)

I am starting slowly to improve on the situation, and will have a few fishes (guppies) by the time autumn term starts, and I have already started a pond-life aquarium with weed & a few shrimps etc., taken from my own ponds.

I have suggested that we keep axolotls, and this has been welcomed. However, there seem to be few places to acquire these charming creatures in this country. I have been 'reading around' the subject for a while, and would like to raise some spawn. Anyone in GB point me to anyone who breeds? I have registered with one website supplier so far.

Many thanks for any help, & *hello* again!

Welcome!! Good luck with your endeavours ... I tentatively began encouraging my childrens primary school to start a wildlife pond and garden area but had to to take a step back while they built a computer block. With a new school year and headteacher I hope to start again. Axolotl in the school was toyed with until I realised that children and teachers like to be kept on the warm side..axolotl on the hand need to be kept colder, unfortunately funding did not stretch to a chiller for them.
