Does anyone know the rates at which axolotls grow? It'd be nice to have a way to correlate age with lengths or weights - similar to growth charts for kids. If I can get enough information, I could throw something together to have a graphic representation for everybody.

Mine usually average around an inch a month. It is variable with tank parameters though. Stress levels, frequency of feedings, nutrition, etc.
I did charts of two of mine from egg to adult, it's fun :)

You can´t really produce an accurate chart...you could at most, provide vague ranges of age with very limited accuracy. You could have a large 6 month old axolotl twice the size of a tiny, malnourished 2 year old.
Even given the same conditions (temps, diet, etc) you could get significant variations due to genetics, although it would be considerably more reliable.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
