I'm going on a hike to look for some CA newts. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on finding them. Thanks!

INaturalist is a great way to connect to the community and see what species have been seen in the area and where.

Check out herpmapper.com, you can select country, state, and county, and just leave to taxon section of the searchbar blank, and you can get everything that people have reported in your county.

I also suggest iNaturalist. Use the map and you'll find lots of localities very easily. I'd give more tips but it depends on where you are located. Northern California Newt (Taricha torosa) populations are starting to come out, not sure about southern populations. The northern populations might already be a bit less active due to colder temps but on a rainy day with temps at 50F or higher, i'd say they should be out and about.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
