I just got 50 huge worms in the mail. My axolotl is terrified of them so I have to chop them up. I was thinking about freezing them and chopping them up so I don't have to have a tub of live worms in my house. Just defrost them in some warm water and hay presto bite size worm treats. Anyone see any problems in this before I do it?

Re: Anyone freez there worms?

You can't freeze worms. They will turn to mush and no one will eat them.

Also, dead worms STINK.

Re: Anyone freez there worms?

Damn. That's my plan down the tubes

Re: Anyone freez there worms?

lol I'd rather have live worms than dead ones in my house anytime. also, its not like other feeders where you have to worry about them getting out (if you put a lid on them at least).
I understand that worms are gross to some of us, but oh man, i've had way worse things in my fridge/freezer!

Re: Anyone freez there worms?

Glad you didn't chop them yet. Dead worm smell is the worst thing on earth, and lasts for days in a room. You should put them outside in a tub of moist soil and let them hang out, if you can't stand to have them inside. I had two containers of a hundred worms each in soil in my fridge and they lasted for two months.

Re: Anyone freez there worms?

 omgosh I busted right out laughing at "my axolotl is terrified of them"!!!

Only because I know the reaction because I've seen it firsthand.....like "EEEEK!!! What IS that thing?!?!?!" and kind of like "you want me to WHAT?!? EAT IT?!?! Do you see how BIG it is?!?!"

Two weeks later they slurp'em right up whole, dancing around and flashing their 'feathers' in appreciation!:p

And ya, I have 3 containers of black worms and 2 of earthworms in our fridge at the moment. My husband just goes with it now! :D

It's a shame I can't give him a whole worm, I don't think he could handle one. Defiantly getting med ones next time. Plus the smallest amount I could get was 50, he's never going to eat 50 in 2 months. Saying that I had a little tub of worms that came with my axolotl that lasted forever. The even started having babies. Didn't even keep them in the fridge. Never going to be able to keep them in my fridge.

Hi,

We get tubs of approx 24 worms from a fishing tackle shop that a forum member who lives nearby recommended. We were told not to put them in the fridge because they'd turn to mush.

We have two axies and they each eat one worm per day so we're buying a new tub every 10 days or so.

Seriously considering buying a worm farm so that we can 'grow our own' food for them.

Mach

Good idea. I just gave them some apple and wet news paper. Hope that keeps them going.

i always freeze my worms. my fire bellies like it better.;)
