Looking to start a 20 gallon long to upgrade my axolotl. Have seen some varying info on filters. I currently have an Aquatop filter with spray bar. I like the spray bar in that it is easy to adjust flow but the filter is a pain in the rear to clean and stops up easily with planted tank. Was thinking about doing a HOB filter for 20L. I have a couple of Aquaclear 20 filters. Would that be appropriate or even a larger one like a 30 if I use a sponge filter over intake valve and a baffle on water flow? What other recommendations are there for good filters that are lotl friendly and reasonable price. Right now it would be just my boy Coconut but I hope to add another at some point.

I really like sponge filters. I have two 1 in 10 gallon and 1 in 5 gallon . Picked both up off eBay for $3 each. I have never had a clogged filter and i forgot to rinse 1 filter for 3 months. Both tanks are planted tanks to. I hade internal filter with spray bar that would be my second choice . But i still had to mess with that because it was to much current for my newts. I didn't have a valve to slow down air pressure. Probably would have worked good if i hade a valve. I feel its way easier to mess with and clean sponge filter.

Good idea. I use the sponge filters in a lot of my fish tanks and they are super easy to clean. Squeeze and go! Hadn't thought about that for axolotl but easy to adjust flow with valve so flow wouldn't be a problem.
