Just looking for some general ideas regarding aquarium heaters for a 10 gallon tank...price, quality, and whatnot.

Ummm, well if you are planning on using it on newts or aquatic salamanders, you should not get one at all. It is a big waste of your money. The only suggestion would be if they are in a very cold basment, or outside when it is freezing cold. Good luck.

It's outside. Just want to regulate the temp. a few degrees to prevent the surface from freezing.

Prices?

ah, im sorry, I am not sure about outdoor set-ups, just keep asking, good luck.

One thing to look for is to make sure the thermometer is actually able to regulate LOW temperatures. Most of them don't have a thermostat that can regulate the temperature at anything lower than 70F.
